It turns out that… nuclear [power] is the safest way to make reliable electricity…  Over an 80-year lifespan, fewer than 200 people will die from the radiation from the worst nuclear accident, Chernobyl, and zero will die from the small amounts of radiant particulate matter that escaped from Fukushima…  [In fact] nuclear plants have actually saved nearly two million lives to date that would have been lost to air pollution…  By contrast, solar panels require 17 times more materials in the form of cement, glass, concrete, and steel than do nuclear plants, and create over 200 times more waste.  We tend to think of solar panels as clean, but the truth is that there is no plan anywhere to deal with solar panels at the end of their 20 to 25 year lifespan… [and w]ind turbines, surprisingly, kill more people than nuclear plants…

Had Germany spent $580 billion on nuclear instead of renewables, and the fossil plant upgrades and grid expansions they require, it would have had enough energy to both replace all fossil fuels and biomass in its electricity sector and replace all of the petroleum it uses for cars and light trucks.
Had California spent an estimated $100 billion on nuclear instead of on wind and solar, it would have had enough energy to replace all fossil fuels in its in-state electricity mix.  California’s power sector emissions are over twice as high today as they would have been had the state kept open and built planned nuclear plants.

[And that’s even with uranium-based reactors.  Check out what could be if we replaced them with thorium-based reactors…]

Thorium reactors have proven to be self-correcting [and] thorium is 3X more abundant that uranium and there are numerous safety and efficiency advantages of thorium designs over solid fuel Uranium reactors.

Chernobyl:

… the overall rate of cancer deaths and other health effects related to Chernobyl’s radiation leak is lower than was initially feared…  The majority of the five million residents living in contaminated areas… received very small radiation doses comparable to natural background levels (0.1 rem per year)…  Today the available evidence does not strongly connect the accident to radiation-induced increases of leukemia or solid cancer, other than thyroid cancer.
