The Gospel Coalition:

The new Gnostic Heresy at The Gospel Coalition

[Michael] Horton slanders white evangelical Christians and fails to fairly portray concepts like nationalism or Christian nationalism.  He gets all of his information from Woke, left-wing scholars committed to deconstructing these concepts.

[That’s actually overstated (which is not uncommon at the Capstone Report, despite their many useful and accurate contributions to evangelical journalism.  While Mike Horton is badly misinformed on subjects related to the intersection of  Christianity and politics , he does not get “all of his information from Woke, left-wing scholars committed to deconstructing” Christian nationalism, a concept well developed at the bottom of  this page .  Horton — like most credentialed theologians at the Gospel Coalition —  is thoroughly orthodox theologically (even more so than the publisher of Capstone Report) but he has — sadly — lost his  biblical moorings  when he sets sail on the sea of political though.]

Calls are mounting for evangelical publication The Gospel Coalition to address a piece that called Kyle Rittenhouse an “armed mass shooter,” like the Charleston church shooter.

[A] Gospel Coalition leader   urged  Christians to vote for [Anti-Christ-ian Hitlary] Clinton [in 2016] and one [TGC]  blog  blamed all white people for the murder of Martin Luther King, and TGC’s website hosted a slander of Kyle Rittenhouse calling Rittenhouse a mass shooter and comparing the Rittenhouse self-defense shooting to the murder perpetrated by Dylan Roof. Also, TGC has called nationalism (the idea that nations deserve self-determination) a heresy. And not to forget, TGC has lied about the American Family Association… ‘ Social Justice ‘ and ‘ Antiracist ‘ advocate Jemar Tisby is listed over 40 times on the TGC website.  40 times.

Liberal Christian Attempts To Debate Atheist But They Just Agree On Everything

[As we have said on many of ASND’s pages, good satire is made good when it rightly reveals a painful truth using humor.]

Mainline Protestantism is a broadly inclusive group of theologically liberal denominations such as the  Episcopal Church , the  Evangelical Lutheran Church in America , the  United Church of Christ , and the  Presbyterian Church (USA) …  [In] his 1923 book Christianity and Liberalism… [Princeton Seminary theologian] J. Gresham Machen described liberalism not as a variant of Christianity but as an entirely different religion. He wrote: ‘In the present conflict, the great redemptive religion which has been always known as Christianity is battling against a totally diverse type of religious belief, which is only more destructive of the Christian faith because it makes use of traditional Christian terminology’…  Machen considered the church in the book’s final chapter, where he argued that since [liberalism] was a different religion altogether, the honorable thing for [liberals] to do was to withdraw from the [Presbyterian] church [USA]… A General Assembly [of the PCUSA] special commission appointed to study the causes of unrest in the church turned a deaf ear to Machen’s testimony to the threat of liberalism… [so] Machen [himself] left [Princeton Seminary] and founded Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia [then, a decade later, he left the PCUSA and founded the Orthodox Presbyterian Church]…  Sadly, few followed him (barely five thousand from a two-million-member church)…  Ironically, what many conservative descendants of the [early 20th century] fundamentalist movement [in some ways characterized by Machen] share with the mainline liberalism that was their nemesis a century ago is a similar drift toward doctrinal indifference.  In emphasizing an abbreviated list of ‘essential’ doctrines, many [contemporary] evangelicals themselves have developed innovative ways of defining the Christian faith, departing from a creedal-based system of doctrine found in Scripture and substituting a theological minimalism built on large but thin [esoteric] communal ties.  If liberals had overtly jettisoned the Westminster Standards in their zeal for becoming modern, a confessional vocabulary has also slowly declined on the right.  An allergy to theological precision has left many of the heirs of both liberalism and fundamentalism barren of theological boundaries.

What is heresy?

We are now seeing a wide-scale rejection of God’s Word as the authority for faith and practice… by supposedly Evangelical leaders and institutions… [For example] Chick-Fil-A unjustifiably disparaged the Salvation Army, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Paul Anderson Youth Home…  [The] National Association of Evangelicals, who recently endorsed radical leftist legislation that would overturn religious free speech and free exercise by establishing sexual orientation and gender identity as protected categories under federal nondiscrimination law…  [T]he Southern Baptist Convention is… drifting into political and theological liberalism and away from Biblical authority, with its emerging emphasis on ‘social justice,  Critical Race Theory , Intersectionality, and the redefining of biblical gender roles‘ — all of which are little more than leftist code words for their victim-based scheme of identity politics…  The [formerly] conservative PCA denomination seems not far behind [the SBC].  There we see the ‘Revoice‘ movement forging a beachhead for LGBT inclusion within the framework of ‘the historic Christian tradition.’  Revoice says what’s wrong with same-sex attraction is not that it is sinful, but that others are sinfully opposed to it…  Christianity Today… decided that building the kingdom of God includes calling for the impeachment of President Trump [on what were known from the beginning to be completely  false charges ].  A false, virtue-signaling kind of kingdom-building to be sure…   Without question, the most astonishing departure from Biblical authority comes from Pastor Andy Stanley, who called Christians to ‘unhitch‘ their faith from the Old Testament… and he calls church unity more important than Biblical fidelity…  I take no delight in calling out others for Biblical infidelity.  Yet, when Christian leaders are clearly losing their way, love for them, faithfulness to the Gospel, and heartfelt concern for those they may mislead, compels truth telling, however painful.

[BTW, and for the record, speaking of  Critical Race Theory]

No, Martin Luther King Would Not Celebrate ‘Critical Race Theory’

Truth, Not Politics, is at the Root of the Left-Right Divide Because Truth is Not a Left-Wing Value

Liberal Christianity is Suicide of the Mind

The first moral error of political liberalism is propitiationism.  According to this notion I should do unto others as they want; [but] according to Christianity I should do unto others as they need [ Luke 12:5 ; 2Cor 13:5 ]…  The second moral error of political liberalism is expropriationism.  According to this notion I may take from others to help the needy, giving nothing of my own; according to Christianity I should give of my own to help the needy, taking from no one [ Ex 20:15 ; Acts 10:1-2 ]…  The third moral error of political liberalism is solipsism.  According to this notion human beings make themselves, belong to themselves, and have value in and of themselves; according to Christianity they are made by God, belong to Him, and have value because they are loved by Him and made in His image [ Gen 1:27 ; John 3:16 ]…  The fourth moral error of political liberalism is absolutionism.  According to this notion we cannot be blamed when we violate the moral law, either because we cannot help it, because we have no choice, or because it is our choice; according to Christianity we must be blamed, because we are morally responsible beings [ Rom 1:20 ; Mark 16:16 ].  Of course absolutionism cannot be practiced consistently, nor would it be so convenient to its practitioners if it could…  The fifth moral error of political liberalism is perfectionism.  According to this notion human effort is adequate to cure human evil; according to Christianity our sin, like our guilt, can be erased only by the grace of God through faith in Christ [ Eph 2:8-9 ; 1John 2:23 ].  Perfectionists also think the cure can be completed in human time.  Some even believe it can be arranged for whole societies at once.  By contrast, the faith teaches that God must start over with each person, and that although guilt is erased immediately, the cure of sin is not complete until the next life…  The sixth moral error of political liberalism is universalism.  According to this notion the human race forms a harmony whose divisions are ultimately either unreal or unimportant; according to Christianity human harmony has been shattered by sin and cannot be fully healed by any means short of conversion [ Rom 2:12 ; Rom 10:9-10 ]…  The seventh moral error of political liberalism is neutralism.  According to this notion the virtue of tolerance requires suspending judgments about good and evil; according to Christianity it requires making judgments about good and evil [ John 7:24 ; 1Th 5:21 ]…  The eighth moral error of political liberalism is collectivism. According to this notion the state is more important to the child than the family; according to Christianity the family is more important to the child than the state [ Eph 6:1 ; Col 3:20 ]. ”

Young ‘Millennials’ losing faith in record numbers

Raphael Warnock has pastored Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta for the past 15 years and previously pastored churches in New York and Maryland.  Ebenezer is the same church where Martin Luther King Sr. served as pastor for 40 years and where his son, Martin Luther King Jr., served before leading the civil rights movement… Warnock is [also] a graduate of Union Theological Seminary in New York City, where he earned multiple graduate degrees, including a master of divinity, a master of philosophy and a doctorate in philosophy… [but Union Seminary] abandoned any semblance of [Christian] orthodoxy decades ago.  In fact, the student population includes Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Unitarian Universalists and those who identify as ‘pagan’…. Student groups on [Union’s] campus include ‘Seminarians for Reproductive Justice,’ ‘Queen Caucus‘ and a caucus for ‘queer people of color.’  The [seminary’s] liberal-leaning theology is not a recent trend; rather, the seminary has been a bastion for liberal theology for over a century.  In one well-known episode, [Anti-Hitler, Nazi-era] German pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer accepted a teaching position at Union Theological Seminary [way back] in 1939, but soon left in disgust. ‘There is no [Christian] theology here,’ he wrote…  Although Warnock is a pastor, his public statements make it clear that his theology and political views are not in step with [Christ].  For example, Scripture is unequivocally clear that the unborn are human persons whom God knows in the womb.  However, when responding to a reporter’s questions about his stance on health care and abortion, Warnock said he believes abortion is a human right…  Warnock [also] believes that when your biblical beliefs or personal faith contradict the beliefs and convictions of the culture, your biblical beliefs or personal faith must yield to the culture.

Baptist Pastor Oliver Thomas is simply one in a long line of terribly misguided ‘clergy’ who believe the best thing for the church is to stop being Christian.

Sex & Sexuality:

[See, also,  this page .]

For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the [liberals] who do not know God… because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to [those who truly believe].”
1Thessalonians 4:3-8

Anyone who rejects the teaching of Paul and the other Apostles on human sexuality is rejecting God Himself. T hus, one cannot be a Christian and believe the world’s false narratives about human sexuality or embrace a sexual ethic that approves of homosexuality, heterosexual fornication, bestiality, pornography, incest, adultery, pedophilia, premarital cohabitation, polygamy, or anything else forbidden by the Lord in His Word ( Lev. 18 ; 1 Cor. 56:9–11 ; 1 Thess. 4:3–7 ).  This is not to say that it is impossible for Christians to commit sexual sin.  Believers can and do fall into all types of sin, including violations of God’s sexual ethic.  And thanks be to God, there is forgiveness for all types of sin, including sexual transgressions, IF we trust in Christ and RENOUNCE our evil ways ( 1 John 1:8–9 ).  But those who have been converted to Christ do not approve of sexual sin or seek to change the biblical ethic.  They embrace the Bible’s teaching, even while recognizing that they fall short of it.  Anyone who professes Christ and rejects God’s Word on sexual matters does not have the Holy Spirit and thus is not a true believer ( 1 Thess. 4:8 ).  If we want to please God, we must [WANT to] keep His moral law.  And if we do not want to keep His moral law, we do not want to please Him and cannot call ourselves Christians.

“There is a deep spiritual crisis in… the United States.  Society has become void of any kind of fundamental values. In fact, morals and morality have been turned completely upside down.  It means that we are actually having a kind of mercy towards people [liberals] who want to do evil to our society, and we are very angry with people who tell the truth…  [Christians are] get[ing] socially marginalized [by liberals who are]… criminaliz[ing] your opinions…  [Liberalism has become] cultural Marxism [devoted to sexual] identity politics [e.g. homosexuality, transgenderism, etc.]…  It appears tolerant and loving, but it’s anything but.  It is a completely anti-Christian system.  And the most diabolical part of it is that [many professing ‘Christians’ are] using Christianity to welcome this [outright evil]…  [These professing ‘Christians’] are using… [left-wing, anti-Christian] ‘Christianity’ to break down the Christian culture…  I don’t think it’s possible to understand what’s going on today on the political scene if you don’t understand spirituality and these dominions that are unseen… we’re not fighting against flesh and blood but against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.  And I think they’re very much at work today…  [These anti-Christs] never come to you and present themselves as evil forces. They come in the disguise of something that is beautiful [i.e. liberalism] and looks really great and, you know, light.

Cultural Marxism Is Grinding Christianity Into Historical Dust

How did we get to a place where… the genital mutilation that allows a biological man to masquerade as a woman cause celebration and affirmation… [and people ] reject [biological] truth not because it’s false but because it ‘hurts‘?…  The answer is  intersectionality , an analytical tool introduced in humanities and social science departments in U.S. universities in the 1990s (…I had been a university professor living in serially monogamous lesbian relationships during the 1990s).  Intersectionality creates a metanarrative (grand story) out of oppression.  It maintains that the world is made up of power struggles, and that white male heterosexual patriarchy must be destroyed in order to liberate those who are oppressed by it… [Intersectionality begins as a] set of ever-expanding personal qualities that constitute identity and personhood: age, race, class, sex, sexuality, gender identity, weight, attractiveness, feelings, phobias — [but] the list [never ends]…  Indeed, intersectionality maintains that who you truly are is measured by how many victim statuses you can claim — with your human dignity only accruing through intolerance of all forms of disagreement about your perceptions of self and world…  Intersectionality confuses justice, a command of God to defend the poor and the needy (Mic. 6:8), with a conception of justice not defined by Scripture…  [I]ntersectionality [therefore] works at cross-purposes with the gospel: first, by fostering an unbiblical view of human identity, and second, by producing social fragmentation [because it] fails to distinguish between morally neutral descriptions of people’s lived experience (ethnicity and class) with morally charged descriptions (sexual orientation and gender identity).  Because intersectionality does not have a biblical category of sin, it does not have a biblical category of repentance, redemption, or grace.  [Intersectionality] understands the biblical complementarity of husbands and wives as perverted and ‘weaponized‘…  Suffering in this worldview includes both material and perceived suffering: the ‘dignitary harm‘ clause of the Obergefell v. Hodges decision, the 2015 Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage in all fifty states, expanded the concept of harm to include harm to one’s dignity and identity.  Thus, any perceived rejection of personal identity based in LGBTQ+ affirmation constitutes harm.  Harm, then, [has been judicially — rather than medically — redefined to be] both material and psychological, both real and perceived…  Intersectionality produces never-ending social division and fragmentation…  For example, intersectionality demands that youhonor someone’s pronouns‘ even while knowing that those pronouns [are self-evidently and scientifically false and that they] can change tomorrow.  We are told [by liberals] that good neighbors lie to each other like this, pretending that women can be men and men can be women.  We are told [by liberals] that a homosexual orientation is indelible and permanent, but biological sexual difference is [merely] a matter of personal opinion…  These contradictions to [both scientific reality and] the creation ordinance violate both love of neighbor and common sense.  Intersectionality claims to create community, but the community it creates is fractured, victim-minded, angry, and inconsolable.  This is the exact opposite of the community created by the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control; Gal. 5:22–23).  When intersectionality joins efforts with the gospel, it leaves us with an immature faith, a false hope, and a deceptive vocabulary…  The church’s embrace of intersectionality as an analytical tool was intended to give voice to the voiceless.  But the [endless list of] victimized identities that emerge from intersectionality are perpetually immature and in constant need of therapy and affirmation…  Gone are the days of empowerment; intersectionality requires [constant] life support [for its proponents]…  Churches and parachurch organizations should be aware: intersectionality will not serve the gospel. It will not help you become kinder, more aware of the world around you, or better able to deal with diversity.  Rather, [intersectionality] will introduce a new set of false virtues and false vices into your ministry.

It is no secret that [liberal] American politics ha[ve] been overtaken by identity politics — one of the popular layers in the social justice agenda…  Through [liberal] ‘intersectionality’, the more victim groups a person identifies with — the more power they can obtain… [and] intersectionality is now being used to leverage a social justice movement within evangelicalism…  [The new] grievance industry is a very lucrative industry and it has now entered evangelical circles…  [One example:] A large number of Southern Baptist pastors would not embrace Beth Moore’s theology, but due to identity politics and the perceived need to empower women within evangelical denominations — she receives a pass on her deficient theological positions…  [Another example: B]oth the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) and the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) have been marked by the Revoice Conference controversy of 2018 that has promoted many troubling ideas and positions regarding same-sex attraction and LGBTQA+ Christianity…  Now, another ministry has arisen within evangelical circles with a similar purpose under the name, ‘Living Out’…  [Another example:] Many black Christians are instructing white Christians to be quiet and listen on matters of social justice…  In some cases, [church elders] are being encouraged to choose lesser qualified black leaders over more qualified white leaders in order to reach the goal of diversity among church leadership…  [S]ola Scriptura been [been] replaced by sola identitatem… [I]dentity politics [has] hindered our ability to exercise good biblical discernment…  Pragmatism is the historic thorn in the church’s side.  The wave of the pragmatic movements such as the church growth movement have left the evangelical church weak and superficial in many ways.  When churches, seminaries, and denominations make decisions based upon the desired benefit rather than the truth of God’s Word — it weakens the church.  The desire to be culturally relevant has caused many churches and denominations to crumble…  While many conservative evangelicals embrace the sovereignty of God and the sufficiency of Scripture — they give greater priority to pragmatism in how they make decisions…  The church in America today is being driven off course by identity politics.  The identity of the church today is being attached to the color of skin and the priority of gender empowerment rather than Jesus Christ…  If the church continues to feed the monster of identity politics — it will eventually bite the arm that feeds it.  Consider the direct connection between identity politics and the freedom of speech restrictions and hate crime legislation that are quickly approaching the church in our day.  These items are not isolated nor are they disconnected from the overarching social justice agenda.  Today the church is becoming increasingly  woke , but in reality it needs to be awakened to the truth of the gospel alone…  When Paul wrote to the church in Galatia —he pointed to the union that [all true Christians have] in Christ.  The bond is Jesus [alone] and the church’s identity cannot be focused on ethnicity or gender. Paul wrote, ‘For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise. (Gal. 3:27-29).  Paul said almost the same thing in Colossians 3:11.  We don’t find our identity as the ‘woke church’ or the ‘black church’ or the ‘white church’ or the ‘hipster church’ [or the ‘gay church’].  Instead, we find our identity in Jesus [ALONE].  We are CHRISTians… [and as Christians w]e must boldly stand in opposition to the intersectionality politics in light of the fact that we have a sufficient Word that is capable of guiding us along the broken roads of our culture (Ps. 119:11).  For me and countless thousands of Christians across America — the Word of God is enough.

[Speaking of “Sola Scritura“…]

Progressive Evangelical Leaders Meet To Affirm Doctrine Of ‘Sola Feels’

[Yes that was satirical, but the reason good satire is good is because it exposes truth with humor.]

Who are Christians to pick on homosexuality, when they struggle with gossip and selfishness?

[Are those the only sins — gossip and selfishness — with which Christians struggle?  What about the same sin of lust, only directed towards ineligible members of the opposite sex rather than ineligible members of the same sex?  Did you know the numbers of professing evangelicals viewing online pornography (including women, btw) are essentially the same as unbelievers?  What about the sin of gluttony (displayed as obesity)?  Have you looked at many of the people in the Christian pews?  What about the sins of self righteousness, harshness, bitterness, unforgiveness…?  Are Christians supposedly above and beyond them?]

“[Evangelicals have been] complicit, even if ignorantly and passively so, in the cultural embrace of the disease conceptualization of homosexuality.  [They] off-loaded responsibility for the articulation of a thoughtful, caring, theologically rich, and pastorally sensitive understanding of sexual brokenness grounded in [their] various religious traditions by conceptualizing homosexuality as a disease, and so we were unprepared for the vacuum created by that explanation’s timely demise [in the broader, more secular culture].  The best ecclesiastical, professional, legal, and social policy will be founded not on falsehoods or grotesque and indefensible simplifications [about homosexuality] but on a clearheaded grasp of reality in all its complexities, as well as on a humble recognition of all that we do not know.

Liberal [or progressive] ‘Christianity’ regards the Bible as a good book but insists it must be reinterpreted to comport with contemporary society… [Proponents insist Christians must] affirm the new sexuality embodied in the LGBTQ movement or affirm the full authority of Scripture and be anathema in the postmodern culture… [effectively relegating Christians] to the outer margins of society…  [While it istempting  for Christians seek a ‘middle ground’ on such issues, the Bible [i.e. God] provides no such option… [because] issues such as homosexuality cannot be defined on the world’s terms…  There’s no middle ground between affirming and denying the bodily resurrection of Christ.  There’s also no middle ground between defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman and saying it can be something else.
