How Many People Claim To Have Witnessed A Miracle?

Craig Keener cites a large variety of sources that give us numbers for different groups, and he often refers to hundreds of millions of miracle witnesses.

http://www.triablogue.blogspot.com/2012/07/how-many-people-claim-to-have-witnessed.html

     &

In his book, Miracles (Grand Rapids, Michigan: Baker Academic, 2011), Craig Keener cites many examples of modern miracle reports that involve the testimony of eyewitnesses, medical documentation, and other forms of evidence. Below are several examples.

http://www.triablogue.blogspot.com/2012/07/modern-miracle-reports-with-evidence.html

     &

Keener repeatedly cites doctors who have claimed to have witnessed healing and to have medical documentation for it.

http://www.triablogue.blogspot.com/2012/07/modern-miracle-reports-with-evidence_15.html

      &

Keener refers to cases involving ‘creation of something like a new uterus’ (n. 156 on 334); ‘rapid generation of bone’ (n. 31 on 433); the restoration of an eye blinded by ‘lacerations from barbed wire’ (519); ‘a woman who had had her fingers partly amputated on one hand was healed of cancer.  The fingers grew back after prayer, and ‘finger-nails are also forming.” (705); ‘a Jansenist who lacked legs, as attested by two surgeons, yet grew them miraculously’ (n. 357 on 705); ‘the gradual re-formation of an adult’s bones and leg after amputation beneath the knee’ (n. 358 on 705); ‘half-inch fingers all grow out to three inches over the course of an hour and a half of prayer’ (706); ‘a partially severed thumb grew out instantly’ (706); ‘a misshapen skull was visibly healed’ (706).  There are more examples Keener discusses…  As Keener notes during the radio program cited above, these accounts range across a spectrum of credibility.  But even with cases for which we don’t have much evidence that the miracle occurred, it doesn’t follow [necessarily] that the account is false.

Keener discusses a couple of cases in which the alleged resurrection was caught on video (549-550).  He often cites eyewitness testimony, including the testimony of doctors and other medical workers, and he interviews some eyewitnesses himself…  He discusses some cases that involve multiple lines of evidence.  For example, three people witnessed the resurrection, one or more of them had relevant medical training, the resurrection occurred at the time of a prayer, the person who prayed sensed a compulsion to do so, even though he wouldn’t normally do such a thing, etc.

      &

Patrick McNamara, director of the Evolutionary Neurobehavior Laboratory at Boston University School of Medicine, and Reka Szent-Imrey, research associate at the Institute for the Biocultural Study of Religion, challenge the traditional intellectual goal of merely debunking miracle claims rather than learning from them… While agnostic about supernatural causation, they insist that scholars should study and learn from these cures.

      &

Critics of the supernatural often speculate that alleged miraculous healings are instead naturalistic healings of a psychosomatic nature. But many types of healing and recipients of healing are poor candidates for that hypothesis. Craig Keener gives many examples in his book…

    &

… if the evidence suggests that a miracle has occurred, then merely objecting that the apparent miracle is deficient in some way isn’t enough to prove that a miracle hasn’t occurred, nor does it even prove that the miracle isn’t Divine.
