[Next thing, waddya bet, conservatives will be throwing this up in our faces as  supposedly   another   example  why welfare – as  currently   structured – is a  complete  and  total   waste  of productive people’s income.]

The Coming Entitlements Cliff

http://www.ipi.org/docLib/20121030_EntitlementsCliff.pdf

———————-

Federal entitlements are driving this spending growth, having increased from less than half of total federal outlays just 20 years ago to nearly 62 percent in 2012.   Three major programs — Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security — dominate in size and growth, soaking up about 44 percent of the budget.

http://thf_media.s3.amazonaws.com/2012/pdf/SR121.pdf

———————-

In 1960, entitlement payments accounted for well under a third of the federal government’s total outlays — about the same fraction as in 1940, when the Great Depression was still shaping American life. But over subsequent decades, entitlements as a percentage of total federal spending soared.  By 2010 they accounted for just about two-thirds of all federal spending, with all other responsibilities of the federal government making up barely one-third. In a very real sense, entitlements have turned American governance upside-down.  Even after adjusting for inflation and population growth, entitlement transfers to individuals have grown 727% over the past half-century…  In 2010 alone, government at all levels oversaw a transfer of over $2.2 trillion in money, goods and services.  The burden of these entitlements came to slightly more than $7,200 for every person in America.  Scaled against a notional family of four, the average entitlements burden for that year alone approached $29,000…  The taker mentality has thus ineluctably gravitated toward taking from a pool of citizens who can offer no resistance to such schemes: the unborn descendants of today’s entitlement-seeking population.”

I always laugh and sometimes frown when people say the Christian thing to do is to continue to spend money recklessly like we are doing now.  If the government spends a dollar, that dollar has to come from somebody or somewhere…  Isn’t it Christian to care about your kids and your grand kids?  The people who are going to bear the burden of our enormous overspending are our children, grandchildren, and grandchildren’s children [because about half of what our government spends is borrowed money, with long-term repayment schedules].  I don’t think it’s Christian to pass on these enormous millstones of debt on to the necks of our children.

“... the United States spends $65,000 per poor family to fight poverty, even though the average national family income is $50,000.  Most of the money actually goes to finance members of the upper or middle class, who become a powerful claque for never solving the problem.

… when enlightened social scientists, like Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY), suggested that inept entitlement programs  create and sustain generational dependencies, such arguments are often dismissed as racism…  The NY Times and like-minded [liberal] social theorists ignore the key sources of social motivation — and then fail to reform those government programs, such as intemperate welfare and impotent [ governmenteducation , which actually make social and economic poverty possible.

In the Supreme Court of the United States

On Petition for Writ of Certiorari to the United

States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit

BRIEF AMICUS CURIAE OF GAIL HERIOT,

PETER KIRSANOW & TODD GAZIANO,

MEMBERS OF THE UNITED STATES

COMMISSION ON CIVIL RIGHTS, IN

SUPPORT OF THE PETITIONER

Excerpts (all supported with peer-reviewed references):

“Race-Preferential Admissions Were Intended to Facilitate the Entry of Minorities Into Higher Education and Eventually into High-Prestige Careers.  There Is Considerable Evidence, However, That They Have the Opposite Effect.”

“Extensive Research Indicates that Race-Preferential Admissions Have the Effect of Discouraging Preference Beneficiaries from Pursuing Science and Engineering Careers.”

“Race-Preferential Admissions Appear to Have the Effect of Discouraging Minority Students from Becoming College Professors.”

“Race-Preferential Admissions Appear to Have the Effect of Decreasing the Number of Minority Law Students Who Graduate and Pass the Bar.”

“… black men with SAT scores between 1000 and 1099 earn more if they avoid Tier-1 [colleges].  Similarly, black women with SAT scores between 1100 and 1199 earned more if they stayed away from Tier-1 [colleges].”

“Consider, for example, a black male with SAT scores of 1300 who just missed being in the top 10% of his high school class.  If he attends Pennsylvania State, his SAT scores will put him exactly at the 75th percentile in the entering class of 2011.  That would give him an excellent shot at earning grades in the top third and/or graduating with a natural science degree.  If he enrolls at Princeton instead, his SAT scores would put him ninety points below the 25th percentile for that school, making it much more likely his grades will be in the bottom third.”

Schools like to say they take a ‘holistic’ approach in their admissions process, taking into consideration more than a person’s LSAT score and undergraduate grades.  They do.  Apparently, it’s race.
