Why the Levitical Prohibition of Homosexuality Still Applies Today:

Since the early doctrinal creeds of Christianity omitted any mentions of human sexuality, does Christian orthodoxy require a particular position on human sexuality?
Absolutely.
The absence of an ethical stance in the creedal affirmations of the early church doesn’t mean there is no such thing as moral orthodoxy or an ecumenical ethical consensus.  Take infanticide as an example.  Christians over the centuries have defended the intrinsic worth and dignity of newborn babies, standing apart from ancient society when they refused to abandon their infants to the elements and rescued the abandoned infants of others.  This doctrine of human dignity and the corresponding ethic that prohibited infanticide is a good example of an orthodox ethic that, even though not explicitly spelled out in the creeds, follows as a good and necessary consequence of doctrines about God’s fatherhood, the nature of creation, and the broader theological vision assumed by the creedal tradition.  The same is true of sexuality.  The early Christian witness was both doctrinal and ethical.  Among early Christians, we find a strong emphasis on both beliefs and behaviors.

23 out of the 27 books of the New Testament specifically name and condemn fornication, adultery, prostitution, incest, homosexuality or lust.  The first church discipline on record, in fact, was a response to sexual sin (I Corinthians 5) and Paul forbade the Corinthians to associate with any believer practicing it. (I Corinthians 5:11Clearly, then, we can’t just ‘agree to disagree‘ on homosexuality within the church.  If it constitutes a sexual sin, and if sexual sin is a primary issue, then getting right trumps getting along.  [The apostle] Paul would have had little patience with those who’d argue, ‘But we’ll lose people if we take a stand on this!‘  To him, the purity of the church, not its numbers, took precedence (I Corinthians 5:6-7) and truth overrode popularity. (Galatians 1:10Allowing unaddressed sin for the sake of getting along creates unity with impunity, a tolerance we find sometimes in churches, but never in scripture.

Loving Christians Who Experience Same-Sex Attraction

[T]he task of the Christian who experiences same-sex attraction is to put to death the deeds of the body by the Spirit ( Rom. 8:13 ) — a task she shares with all believers.  Yet this task is not so simple, because the church has been in the habit of viewing same-sex sexual sin as more deviant than heterosexual sexual sin… [being] suspicious that real Christians could even experience such temptation…  [T]hey are so fearful of sin infecting the church that they believe or insist that heterosexuality is the only [possible sexual attraction] for a redeemed… Christian [which is redundant], viewing even committed robust celibacy with doubt.  And just as confusing, some taking the name of Christ have abandoned His Word and declared [homosexual] behavior to be blessed…  As the church body, what does it mean to be a safe place for [people] who experience [same-sex] attractions and also want to live under Christ’s authority?  In answering that question, it is helpful to point out what it does not mean. First, being a safe space for the same-sex-attracted Christian doesn’t mean we condone someone taking the name of Christ and then not obeying His Word — we [cannot] condone a revisionist interpretation of Scripture that says that God blesses monogamous [or any other form of] same-gender sexual partnerships…  We have a responsibility to each other to call out sins and to be called out of our sin that so easily entangles, for if we live according to the flesh, we will die.  It is never ‘safe’ to condone sin.  Second, being safe doesn’t mean we don’t talk to our non- Christian friends about what the gospel means for sexuality.  We can be afraid that sharing God’s words about sex will sound crazy and off-putting, and turn them off from ever wanting to hear more about the gospel.  But let’s not forget that God’s view on how we should conduct our life in general is crazy and off-putting to the flesh…  [But] When we communicate the beauty of Christ and what He has done, the Spirit can move in the most unlikely ways for the most unlikely people…  Being safe simply means that those who experience same-sex attraction and want to live in obedience would be able to speak without fear of judgment about their reality, so that they can receive the support we all need in our walk of faith.  To that end, here are three ways we can begin to be safe people in our churches.  1) Don’t Assume Anything about Anyone.  There are people in your church right now who are dealing with these feelings.  If they are in a conservative church, the odds are that they are hiding this part of themselves…  2) Don’t ‘Out’ Anyone, but Create Space for Them to Disclose.  The solution to hiding isn’t to drag someone out against her will…  3)  Be Ready for Disclosure…  If someone comes out to you, recognize that this took incredible courage on her part and that you were chosen because you seemed trustworthy.  The first thing you should do is look your friend in the eye and thank her for her trust, affirm that you love her, and remind her that Jesus loves [him or] her.  Give [him or] her a hug and reach for [his or] her hand.  The next thing you should do is listen…  [Ask] When did [he or] she first know?  What has [his or] her experience been like?  Has [he or] she been wounded by the church?  This is not the time to run a theological litmus test or to demand perfection.  This is a time to bear each other’s burdens in love — perhaps a burden this Christian has been shouldering silently for decades.  Ask her how you can serve her, and don’t make assumptions…  In His power, you can minister compassionately toward people and remain faithful to God’s Word.

… the most credible translation of what Paul is condemning in 1Corinthians6:9 is a person doing exactly what Leviticus condemns: engaging in homosexual sex (a man being a ‘man-lier‘).  Far from dismissing the relevance of Leviticus, Paul is implicitly invoking its enduring validity for our understanding of sexual sin, and drawing on it as the foundation of his teaching on homosexual conduct.  He is saying, ‘Remember what it said not to do in Leviticus18:22and 20:13? Don’t do that!
