[Before ASND presents the evidence on this page that is critical to understand the role of mental illness in mass murders, it is also critical to understand that even if all the corrections proposed on this page are implemented, they will never stop all mass murders by the mentally ill.]

Over half of those committing mass public shootings in the last 25 years saw mental health care professionals before their attack.  Yet in not one single case were these mental health professionals able to identify these murderers as a danger to themselves or others.

At least fourteen… school shootings [in the early 2000s] were committed by those taking or withdrawing from psychiatric drugs… [and] Between 2004 and 2011, there [were] over 11,000 reports to the U.S. FDA’s MedWatch system of psychiatric drug side effects related to violence.  These include 300 cases of homicide…

What people misunderstand about mass shooters is that they are more suicidal than homicidal.  To do something of this nature, you have to no longer care whether you live or die.  The action of taking other people’s lives in the process of killing themselves is a way for them to grab attention on the way out…

Research shows that a disproportionate number of criminal defendants and incarcerated people suffer from various forms of mental illness and substance abuse.  Federal and state criminal justice systems recognize that incarceration alone is not a complete answer to the challenges posed by untreated mentally ill people.  The traditional prison setting does not account for the needs of those struggling with their mental health…  Mentally ill people who try to get help are often turned away.  They are not taken in for evaluation and support and treatment.  Instead, they are frequently just handed a bottle of pills and sent on their way.  This plays into the homeless problem we have.  The majority of the homeless people in America are mentally ill.  Many are also drug-addicted.  Yet regular, helpful, and effective treatment is not available.  Instead of turning a blind eye to this and focusing on guns, we must get to the root cause of the problem.  We must address mental health and dismiss the appeals to privacy rights from the people who refuse to allow these mentally ill people to be taken in and treated for their illness…  We need laws passed by Congress that allow federal funding for effective mental health support nationwide.  States need to enact laws that make these mentally ill individuals subject to sequestration from the general public so they can be treated and so the public can be protected…  The problem is that mentally ill prisoners sent to jail or to prison do not get the treatment they need.  Even prisoners who were on medication before being arrested and incarcerated don’t continue to get their medications once they land in jail.  Instead of routing mentally ill people who commit crimes to jail, we should route them into a system where they can get support and treatment.

Deinstitutionalization:

During the last 40 years of the 20th century, more than 750,000 people were released from mental institutions, because liberals had declared that would be better for society.  With thousands of criminally insane people walking the streets, the numbers of mass shootings increased dramatically 1960–2000.  Since then, they have increased even more.  In many of those shootings, the killer clearly was deranged.

After years of [liberals] destroying [America’s] mental health care system, leaving it in ruins, as a national disgrace, cases of undiagnosed and untreated mental illness are to blame for the horrific episodes of violence that have made headlines and wrongly fueled gun control legislation.  This is true for Jared Lee Loughner, who shot Congressman Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Arizona.  It is true for James Holmes, the man accused of murdering 12 people in a Colorado movie theatre.  It is true for Adam Lanza, the man who murdered 20 children and 6 adults at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.  Dylan Quick reportedly fantasized about killing people by stabbing them since he was a child…  Take all the guns away.  Take all the knives away.  The number of victims of murders with no apparent motive — born of under-treated, poorly treated or untreated mental illness — will be reduced not one bit.  Because there will still be cars, and poisons, and hammers, and axes that can be used to inflict horrible injuries.  The worst episode of school violence, back in 1927, claimed the lives of 38 children, and it involved explosives, not guns or knives.  [Politicians] either fix things, do nothing or harm needed efforts.  Those who would control weapons, instead of mental illness, are in the third category.

[Before ASND examines the legitimate issue of mentally deranged mass murderers, the following items are critically important issues to consider as well.]

Stop Mistaking Evil for Mental Illness
… what was once considered evil or criminal, or at least bad behavior, is now considered [at least by liberals, to be] sickness; what once was considered sickness is now considered [at least by liberals, to be] normal and healthy; and what was once considered normal, wise, or moral behavior is now punished by our ‘enlightened’ [liberal] law.

[Some psych reports on mass murderers which rule out supernatural, demonic influence are likely willful ignorance because many pshych professionals are also  atheists  who are unwilling to even examine  evidence  for  theism .  But willful ignorance in professional evaluation is also intentional fraud.  ASND’s evidence-based point here is that there is significant evidence in favor of significant supernatural, demonic influence in at least some mass murder cases (as well as other social maladies, but those are addressed elsewhere on ASND’s site).  Until this evidence is objectively and publicly analyzed in the peer-reviewed psych literature, we are attempting to fight an enemy — at least some of the time — that we refuse to even acknowledge.]

The most important aspect of preventing gun violence is making as sure as reasonably possible that psychotic, significantly mentally ill, intoxicated, and mentally unstable persons not have immediate access to guns and get prompt psychiatric attention and treatment…  they, like ‘Normal’ persons who are intoxicated and enraged, should not possess guns…  One confounding problem is the incomplete understanding of temporary mental instability of otherwise ‘normal persons’, mental illness in general, severe mental illness, and effective treatment.

Persons with severe personality disorders, while socially dysfunctional, are not technically psychotic but can be very dysfunctional.  They do pose severe problems and a great expense for American society…. America faces an epidemic of severe personality disorder problems. Particularly young adult, disaffected, alienated, socially isolated, angry males preoccupied with guns and violent videogames.  Some of these individuals even impulsively defy and attack police.  Young angry, alienated, and rejected teenagers can be dangerous and prone to violence, even mass murder.  But they are not suffering from diagnosed major psychotic mental illness.  They are often found however under the psychiatric umbrella.  Their acting out behavior often gets labelled ‘behavior disorder’…  Persons with a personality or character disorder are commonly in denial about their… destructive thoughts and behavior.  They in essence are unaware or barely aware of the psychological skin in which they have lived in for most of a life…  When confronted, they often blame the messenger who presented the bad news to them.  According to people with severe personality or character disorder, the police who confront them, the boss who fires them, or spouse that leaves them, are the problem…  Few psychotherapists have enough strength of personality to persist and be helpful in their treatment.  More aggressive treatment programs and legal mandates for treatment of these young people need to be creatively developed and implemented aggressively in our communities.  Persistent follow-up with them is absolutely critical!

Non-Responses to Known Cases of Mental Illness:

[T]hese [mass murder] incidents are almost exclusively perpetrated by young men who have exhibited serious anti-social behavior.  All of them break a slew of existing laws.  All of them have either obtained guns illegally, or legally before having any criminal record. In many, if not most, cases, the shooter is already on the cops’ radar because he has threatened others or written insane, violent manifestos.  In a  study  of mass shootings from 2008 to 2017, the Secret Service found that ‘100 percent of perpetrators showed concerning behaviors, and in 77 percent of shootings, at least one person – most often a peer – knew about their plan.’”

[T]he National Institute of Justice, the research agency of the U.S. Department of Justice, and The Violence Project, a nonpartisan, nonprofit research center, completed what they called the most comprehensive study ever done of mass shootings in the U.S. from 1966 to 2019. Among the report’s conclusions:

Persons who committed public mass shootings in the U.S. over the last half century were commonly troubled by personal trauma before their shooting incidents, nearly always in a state of crisis at the time, and, in most cases, engaged in leaking their plans before opening fire…

Nearly half of individuals who engaged in mass shootings (48 percent) leaked their plans in advance to others, including family members, friends, and colleagues, as well as strangers and law enforcement officers [the Uvalde, TX school shooter did both]

[T]he majority of mass shooters use handguns, and the overwhelming majority of school shooters do not legally purchase their weapons but instead took them from family members [the Uvalde, TX shooter did neither]
